This omnibus of stories focuses on the lonely residents of an off-season seaside hotel in England. Kerr had an arduous time with the role of Sibyl, a woman yearning to burst out of her shuttered world, but constrained by uncertainty. Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh were originally cast in the lead roles, until Olivier squared off with Burt Lancaster, who co-owned the film rights.
