The King and I. 1956. USA. Directed by Walter Lang. Screenplay by Ernest Lehman, based on the musical by Oscar Hammerstein II, Margaret Landon. With Yul Brynner, Rita Moreno. 133 min.
Widow Anna Leonowens and her son move to exotic Bangkok in order to teach English to the thorny king’s brood of children. Brought up as a proper Victorian lady, Anna is at first put off by the gruff monarch, but she soon realizes his bark is far worse than his bite. Kerr is dazzling in a series of Irene Sharaff–designed costumes, but none is so magnificent as the champagne-colored ball gown in which she dances with the king.
