At the Chilton School, the headmaster’s young wife, Laura, takes a special interest in a shy, sensitive young student named Tom. While many of the students thunder about the campus with sports teams and other activities, young Tom is taciturn and reserved. Laura, an outsider herself, shares the boy's interest in books, walks in the garden, and genteel conversation—until one day it seems their friendship may have crossed a critical boundary.
