Edward, My Son. 1949. USA/Great Britain. Directed by George Cukor. Screenplay by Donald Odgen Stewart, based on the play by Roberty Morley, Noel Langley. With Spencer Tracy, Ian Hunter. 112 min.
In Cukor's adaptation of the successful Morley/Langley play, the vexed Boult family is so concerned with what others think, they go to extraordinary measures to construct a cheerful, but false, narrative. Arnold Boult is a schemer who ensures that his son Edward will become a success, no matter how he must finagle the truth. Evelyn, his wife, tries to put the brakes on Arnold’s ploys, but to no avail. She ultimately finds her comfort in a whiskey bottle.
