Major Barbara. 1941. Great Britain. Directed by Gabriel Pascal. Screenplay by George Bernard Shaw, based on his play. With Wendy Hiller, Rex Harrison. 131 min.
Shaw’s satiric examination of society explores how very different people define the concept of redemption. In order to prepare for her role as Jenny Hill, Kerr volunteered anonymously at a Salvation Army outpost. She later remarked that the experiences and the people she met on those visits dramatically influenced her shaping of Jenny. Major Barbara is first of only two films directed by Gabriel Pascal; it was followed by Caesar and Cleopatra (1945).
