*Choreography As Expanded Practice/Dance As Autonomous Medium* — A presentation in response to a series of seminars with Mårten Spångberg
12:00–2:00 PM
The seminars of Swedish choreographer Mårten Spångberg address, through open research and experimentation, the shifting contexts of choreography and dance in contemporary society. They draft notions of choreography as expanded practice next to probing the grounds for the possibility of dance to again identify itself as an autonomous medium. This presentation will be the last in a series of three workshops attempting to open a ground for dance and choreography in respect to composition, improvisation, expression, organization, interpretation and effect. Each workshop is open to the public. Participants need no dance background but should wear suitable clothes to dance in. This series is co-hosted with Movement Research.
Workshop Dates:
Thursday, October 25 · 4:00–6:00 p.m.
Sunday, October 28 · 12:00–2:00 p.m.
Artist Lecture and Book Launch with M.I.A.
3:00–5:00 p.m.
On the occasion of the Rizzoli publication M.I.A., MoMA PS1 invites the English musician, producer, painter, and director Mathangi “Maya” Arulpragasam, aka M.I.A., to give an artist’s lecture about her work. The book is the first comprehensive overview of the artist’s entire visual output to date and tells her life story in collages, photographs, and prints. It opens with her early years at Central Saint Martins art school in London, continues with various exhibitions, installations, and music videos and culminates in the creative work for her three hugely successful albums, mixtapes, and energetic live performances at venues worldwide including MoMA PS1. Also included are assorted lyrics and an exclusive interview in which she candidly discusses the personal events and themes that informed her art and music.
Sunday Sessions is a weekly presentation of performance, moving images, dance, music, and discursive programs. Its mission is to embrace live arts as an integral aspect of contemporary practice and ask how art forms, which unfold in the here and now, produce specific ways of thinking and useful means to engage with the broader world. Every Sunday different artists, curators, thinkers and a range of other cultural agents are invited to share their latest projects and ideas with the MoMA PS1 audience.
Sunday Sessions is made possible by MoMA’s Wallis Annenberg Fund for Innovation in Contemporary Art through the Annenberg Foundation.
