Celebrating Kraftwerk: DJ Afrika Bambaataa
Celebrating Kraftwerk’s extensive influence on electronic music, MoMA PS1 invites distinguished DJs and producers to play tribute sets in the installation Kraftwerk – Retrospective 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8. On four consecutive weekends, the musicians explore different facets of the group’s pioneering sound that influenced musical styles as diverse as Electro-Funk, Disco, New Wave, Techno, and Hip-Hop.
In 1982 Africa Bambaataa & The Soul Sonic Force sampled Kraftwerk’s “Trans Europe Express” to create “Planet Rock”, one of Hip-Hop’s first hymns. Like many Rap and Hip-Hop musicians after him, Bambaataa used Kraftwerk’s melodies and sound inventions to electronically reinvent the rhythmic complexity of black dance music.
Taryn Simon: A Living Man Declared Dead and Other Chapters, I—XVIII
Between 2008 and 2011, Taryn Simon traveled around the world researching and recording bloodlines and their related stories. In each of the 18 chapters that make up the resulting work, A Living Man Declared Dead and Other Chapters, I—XVIII, the external forces of territory, power, circumstance or religion collide with the internal forces of psychological and physical inheritance. In conjunction with her solo exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, Simon presents the extensive exhibition catalog in conversation with Jenny Schlenzka, Associate Curator, MoMA PS1.
