This early work by Otakar Vávra, one of the most enduring and prolific of Czech filmmakers (Kladivo na čarodějnice/The Witches’ Hammer, 1970), reveals a refined stylist working on broadly melodramatic material. The entrapment and exploitation of women—a central theme in Czech cinema from Erotikon to *Loves of a Blonde*—is here approached through the figure of a young restaurant worker (Lída Baarová) who can only help her tubercular lover by marrying her middle-aged boss. 35mm.
