Panenství (Virginity). 1937. Czechoslovakia. Directed by Otakar Vávra. Screenplay by František Čáp, A. Jaroslav Urban, Otakar Vávra, Marie Majerová. With Lída Baarová, Jaroslava Skorkovská, František Kreuzmann. In Czech; English subtitles. 81 min.

This early work by Otakar Vávra, one of the most enduring and prolific of Czech filmmakers (Kladivo na čarodějnice/The Witches’ Hammer, 1970), reveals a refined stylist working on broadly melodramatic material. The entrapment and exploitation of women—a central theme in Czech cinema from Erotikon to Loves of a Blonde—is here approached through the figure of a young restaurant worker (Lída Baarová) who can only help her tubercular lover by marrying her middle-aged boss. 35mm.
