One of the great achievements of the early sound period, Machatý’s first talking film bristles with ideas for the new medium. A shy young stenographer reluctantly accompanies her brassy office mate for an evening of nightclubbing with two predatory plutocrats; eluding their advances, she stumbles out into a stormy night and into a rough worker’s bar, where a sympathetic stranger comes to her aid.
