My Favorite Wife. 1940. USA. Directed by Garson Kanin. Screenplay by Sam Spewack, Bella Spewack, based on the poem “Enoch Arden,” by Alfred Tennyson. With Cary Grant, Irene Dunne, Randolph Scott, Gail Patrick. Tennyson’s poem, about a fisherman lost at sea who returns to find his wife remarried, is turned on its head in this romp. Nick’s wife Ellen goes missing for seven years and turns up just when he marries Bianca. Nick can handle the ladies, but when he finds out Ellen was marooned with a man, he gets irrational in the debonair, stumbling way only Cary Grant can
