Historia de un gran amor (Story of a Great Love). 1942. Mexico. Directed by Julio Bracho. Screenplay by Bracho, from a novel by Pedro Antonio de Alarcón. With Jorge Negrete, Domingo Soler, Gloria Marin. In Spanish; English subtitles. 155 min.

A melodrama in the fundamental sense of the word, with performers who burst into song to express their turbulent emotions, Bracho’s second feature is an epic of doomed romance that extends over the lifetime of its central characters Manuel (the soulful Jorge Negrete), the son of a wealthy landowner left poor by the machinations of a money-lender, and the money-lender’s beautiful daughter (Gloria Marin, Negrete’s offscreen wife).

This film accompanies Between Twilight and Dawn: Julio Bracho and the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema.
