Enter the Dragon. 1973. Hong Kong/USA. Directed by Robert Clouse. With Bruce Lee, John Saxon, Shih Kien Shih, Jim Kelly, Ahna Capri, Angela Mao. 103 min.
This Hong Kong-Hollywood coproduction took kung fu global, and injects the genre with a James Bond touch. Bruce Lee plays a philosophical, Shaolin-trained martial artist going undercover to infiltrate an island fortress, where one-handed bad guy Han (veteran kung fu star Shih Kien) runs a seedy enterprise. A martial arts tournament provides the occasion for Lee’s character to penetrate Han’s empire. John Saxon and Jim Kelly add a dimension of multiculturalism as tournament participants who also get to show off their martial arts finesse. It is, however, the final showdown between Lee and Shih in a hallucinatory hall of mirrors that remains the big stunner. Digital.
