The avant-garde art movement de Stijl (“the style”) was characterized by a radically new approach to form and content, driven by a highly utopian philosophy. The abstract rectilinear shapes, primary colors, and straight horizontal and vertical lines of de Stijl paintings extended theoretically out into the functional, built environment of architecture and design. Explore how painters, sculptors, architects, urban planners, typographers, interior designers, decorative artists, musicians, poets, and dramatists engaged the principles of de Stijl and a new focus on the transformative powers of art and design.
Gallery Sessions, impromptu interactions facilitated by Museum educators that explore the creative process, art history, and the experience of art, take place daily in select galleries. Groups meet in the galleries noted on the schedule. Gallery Sessions are free with Museum admission. No registration is required.
