Mordi e fuggi (Dirty Weekend). 1973. Italy/France. Directed by Dino Risi. Screenplay by Dino Risi, Ruggero Maccari, Bernardino Zapponi. With Marcello Mastroianni, Carole Andre. In Italian; English subtitles. 107 min.
This political comedy, made shortly after In the Name of the People, is loosely based on a sensational real-life incident involving an industrialist from Fiat Argentina. Marcello Mastroianni stars as a crooked pharmaceutical executive who gets kidnapped by a gang of longhaired anarchists during a weekend trip with his student lover (Carole André). The kidnapping becomes a media spectacle, and an opportunity for Risi to interrogate the naïve idealism of young terrorists and the weary bourgeois cynicism of the older generation.
