Operazione San Gennaro (The Treasure of San Gennaro). 1966. Italy/France/Germany. Directed by Dino Risi. Screenplay by Dino Risi, Adriano Baracco, Ennio De Concini, Nino Manfredi. With Nino Manfredi, Senta Berger, Harry Guardino. In Italian; English subtitles. 104 min.
Capitalizing on the international success of Topkapi, Risi’s heist caper has some splendid satirical vignettes. In a Naples crawling with bandits, pimps, and street urchins, Nino Manfredi is the would-be criminal kingpin Dudu. Under the questionable tutelage of a crooked old-timer (the great comic Totò, in one of his last performances), he teams up with Harry Guardino, a hot-tempered American, his statuesque girlfriend Senta Berger, and a crew of dimwitted mooks to steal the priceless jewels of Naples’ patron saint, San Gennaro.
