Hable con ella (Talk to Her). 2002. Spain. Written and directed by Pedro Almodóvar. With Leonor Watling, Rosario Flores, Javier Cámara, Darío Grandinetti. DCP. In Spanish; English subtitles. 112 min.
Talk to Her opens with choreographer Pina Bausch’s quietly stirring dance theater piece Café Müller. Two female dancers (including the choreographer herself), seemingly in their sleep, move unpredictably on a dance floor filled with random chairs and tables. A male dancer feverishly removes each obstacle along their paths to keep the women from getting hurt. A man sobs in the audience. This affecting opening sets the stage for a film about two men in love with two women in comas. One man commits a crime and both are left in despair in a story that is touching, sympathetic, and unnerving. Almodóvar won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.
