Bachelor Party. 1984. USA. Directed by Neal Israel. With Tom Hanks, Adrian Zmed, Tawny Kitaen. 105 min.
Thanks to the one-two punch of Splash and Bachelor Party, 1984 was the year Tom Hanks went from beloved TV comic to bona-fide movie star. Bachelor Party has at its core a rousing clarion call: “Let’s have a bachelor party, with chicks, and guns, and fire trucks, and hookers, and drugs, and booze!” Unsurprisingly, it also features all the hallmarks of raunchy 1980s comedy: rampant cocaine abuse, casual homophobia, adolescent sexuality, and animal hijinks both literal and figurative. Yet Hanks, in a breakout performance of effortless, magnetic affability, singlehandedly elevates the proceedings to “genre classic” status.
