When the son of a prominent right-wing family is brainwashed while on military duty in Korea, he becomes an unwitting assassin in a covert communist conspiracy. Released at the height of the Cold War, when fears over the Cuban Missile Crisis gripped the US, this black-and-white thriller was added to The Library of Congress National Film Registry in 1994. (A remake, directed by Jonathan Demme and starring Denzel Washington in the Frank Sinatra role, was released in 2004.)
