Kisses for My President. 1964. USA. Directed by Curtis Bernhardt. Screenplay by Claude Binyon, Robert G. Kane. With Polly Bergen, Fred MacMurray, Eli Wallach. 113 min.
This film infuses a bit of fun and humor into the mix, as the women of America are responsible for electing the first female president. President Leslie McCloud is extremely busy running the country, and she hands off management of White House social engagements to “First Husband” Thad. Thad isn’t very good with greeting guests—and he’s none too happy to see his portrait in the First Ladies gallery—but he is trying his best. Fred MacMurray brings a perfect balance of mild annoyance and irritation to this amusing, pre–Vietnam era comedy.
