Mary Jenkins Surratt ran a boarding house in which John Wilkes Booth and others met to plan the kidnapping of President Abraham Lincoln. On April 14, 1865, Booth assassinated Lincoln at Ford’s Theater. Following the assassination, a group of eight co-conspirators, including Surratt, were charged with murder before a military court. Despite the efforts of Frederick Aiken in her defense, she was found guilty and hanged on July 7, 1865, becoming the first woman to be executed by the federal government.
