Brook, a prolific director of Shakespearean stage productions, places *King Lear*’s domestic tragedy in a frigid mid-winter Denmark, where the gray skies, short days, and howling wind foretell Lear’s mortality. This black-and-white feature features an exhausted, powerless Lear who, having given away his powers, can’t wrap his mind around his court ignoring his bidding.
