There is no disputing that Richard III is a murderer who’s only interested in ascending to the throne. Set in a make-believe 1930s England replete with fascist symbols and codes, Richard III stars McKellen as a genuine monster with a strangely attractive surface. Thought to be Shakespeare’s own version of court gossip, Richard III allowed 16th-century commoners to comprehend the vicious entanglements of the royals.
