In Dearden’s riff on Othello, set in a cool jazz club, bandleader Rex and his singer wife, Delia, both have some amount of popularity and fame in their circle. Delia has decided to retreat from the limelight to take on a more traditional role in their relationship, until their friend Johnny Cousin attempts to bring her out of “retirement” by offering her a prime spot as his band’s lead singer. Spurned by Delia’s refusal, Johnny sets out to ruin Rex.
