Macbeth. 1971. Great Britain/USA. Directed by Roman Polanski. Screenplay by Polanski, Kenneth Tynan. With John Finch, Francesca Annis, Martin Shaw. 140 min.
Immersed in a gray world of rain, mist, clouds, and mud, Polanski fashions a concise story of revenge. Seemingly devoid of any emotion, each character accepts their fate and unquestioningly marches to its bidding. Obsession with power and the narcotic pull of ambition mold this drama into a violent, disturbing version of the Scottish Play. Gil Taylor’s cinematography is inventive and sometimes ghostly, especially when the nude, sleepwalking Lady Macbeth appears.
