Romeo + Juliet. 1996. USA. Directed by Baz Luhrman. Screenplay by Craig Pearce, Baz Lurhman. With Leonardo DiCaprio, Claire Danes, John Leguizamo. 120 min.
Luhrman’s take on Romeo and Juliet begins with a TV newscast announcing the deaths of the titular duo in Verona Beach, California, where the feuding Montague and Capulet families are real estate moguls and gangsters. This spectacle features a breakneck editing style punctuated by a mix of rock, Latin, and punk music. When Romeo meets Juliet at the masquerade ball, his “angel” is wearing gossamer wings and he is in knight’s armor; they look like children at Halloween. Luhrman takes us on a rollercoaster of adventure and anticipation—even though we know how the story ends.
