Play On! Shakespeare in Silent Film. 2016. Great Britain. Directed by Bryony Dixon, Jane Giles, Becci Jones. 88 min.
This feature-length documentary celebrates the major influence of Shakespeare on cinema; the BFI notes that by the end of the silent era more than 300 films had been produced employing Shakespearean themes. Drawn from the collection of the BFI National Film Archive and presented in collaboration with Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, Play On! offers rare footage of silent films, including what is believed to be John Gielgud’s first cinematic appearance, in the balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet. A new score, written by the musicians of the Globe Theatre, accompanies this historical delight.
