Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. 1990. Great Britain/USA. Written and directed by Tom Stoppard. With Gary Oldman, Tim Roth, Richard Dreyfuss. 117 min.
Cleverly rejiggering text from Hamlet, playwright Tom Stoppard fashions an incredible tale about two minor oafs in Hamlet’s circle. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, virtually identical simpletons, are brought to Elsinore to help cheer up the Danish prince and ascertain if he is indeed on the verge of depression, suicide, or murder. Yet the pair are too dim-witted, self-obsessed, and distracted to make any valid assessment of Hamlet’s state.
