LOOKING FOR MUSHROOMS

Film

Conner was one of many artists in his circle of contemporaries at Canyon Cinema to experiment with expanded consciousness, and he even traveled to Mexico seeking respite from American life. Conner’s LOOKING FOR MUSHROOMS (Short Version) (1959–67), his chronicle of his time in Mexico, serves as the jumping-off point for a program of psychedelic dispatches from distant lands, including works by Ben Van Meter, Chick Strand, Bruce Baillie, and Lawrence Jordan.

Artist and filmmaker Javier Téllez (b. 1969, Valencia, Venezuela) will introduce the September 20 screening. Téllez has extensively researched Antonin Artaud’s psychonautic journeys in Mexico, which were the basis of his recent exhibition To Have Done with the Judgment of God at Koenig & Clinton, New York.
