In this crime drama, Bogart plays a DA trying to clean up the activities of local gangsters and the prostitutes they employ. Mary, who likes to think of herself as a “hostess” while entertaining various male callers, uses her earnings to pay her innocent sister’s college tuition. But after enduring a brutal beating, Mary partners with Bogey to go after a crooked nightclub owner.
