Known for his glossy Alain Delon vehicles (La piscine, Borsalino), the director Jacques Deray also signed this enigmatic anomaly, based on John Gearon’s 1946 novel The Velvet Well. A layover in Barcelona becomes a waking nightmare for Frenchman Lino Ventura, who answers a call for help in an adjoining hotel room and wakes up in a mental institution—or is it?
