Police. 1985. France. Directed by Maurice Pialat. Screenplay by Maurice Pialat, Catherine Breillat, Sylvie Pialat, Jacques Fieschi. With Gérard Depardieu, Sophie Marceau, Richard Anconina. 113 min.
Pialat, the great bull in the china shop of French cinema, tramples the conventions of the policier with the help of Gerard Depardieu (a brutish cop working the mean streets of Belleville) and the open hostility of Sophie Marceau, a former teen star cast here as a drug dealer’s moll, who did not appreciate Pialat’s physically and psychologically punishing direction.
