In France, it is the job of the dialogiste to add wit and elegance to the speech of the characters, and no dialogiste is more venerated than Michel Audiard, who brought his verbal dexterity to dozens of films including this beloved gangster comedy. Lino Ventura teases his own tough-guy image as a gang boss appointed guardian to a spoiled college girl (Sabine Sinjen).
