After an influential apprenticeship with the filmmaker Jacques Feyder in the mid-1930s, Marcel Carné made his auspicious directorial debut with this moody melodrama of a love triangle between the proprietress of a seedy nightclub (Rosay), her gangster lover (Préjean), and her not-so-innocent daughter (Lanvin). Melancholy and fatalistic, this first collaboration between Carné and screenwriter Jacques Prévert would set the tone for their later masterpieces of poetic realism, Quai des brumes, Hôtel du Nord, and Le Jour se lève.
