Pièges (Personal Column). 1939. France. Directed by Robert Siodmak. Screenplay by Jacques Companéez, Simon Gantillon, Ernst Neubach. With Maurice Chevalier, Pierre Renoir, Marie Déa. In French; English subtitles. 111 min.
An exile of Nazi Germany, Siodmak directed a series of entertainments in 1930s France featuring many of the leading stars of the day. Pièges and Mollenard are among the best of these: atmospheric crime dramas whose themes of subterfuge, betrayal, and madness anticipate Siodmak’s Hollywood noir of the 1940s (Phantom Lady, The Spiral Staircase, Cry of the City).
