Les amants de Montparnasse. 1958. France/Italy. Directed by Jacques Becker, Max Ophüls. Screenplay by Michel-Georges Michel. With Gérard Philipe, Lilli Palmer, Lea Padovani. 108 min.

Ophüls wrote (with Henri Jeanson) and planned this adaptation of Michel George-Michel’s novel Les Montparnos but died before filming began. Completed by Jacques Becker, the film remains suffused by Ophüls’s tragic sense, as a young bourgeois woman (Anouk Aimée) struggles to save the gifted painter Amedeo Modigliani (Gérard Philipe) from his demons.
