The Marrying Kind. 1952. USA. Directed by George Cukor. Screenplay by Ruth Gordon, Garson Kanin. With Judy Holliday, Aldo Ray, Madge Kennedy. 92 min.
Florrie and Chet Keefer are a New York couple who can’t stop bickering, and as their verbal sparring increases their happiness quotient plummets. Under Cukor’s direction, the back-and-forth between Holliday and Ray is delightful, though the film misfires when the Keefers lose their child in a drowning accident. In order to underscore the everyday nature of the Keefers’ lives, Cukor aimed for a visual coarseness at odds with his usual upscale look.
