Cooper plays a modern day (in 1948, that is) Good Samaritan who finds that living by a code of Christian charity is to invite an endless parade of freeloaders and deadbeats to take advantage of his generosity—a source of pride and frustration to the real saint in the family, Sam’s long-suffering wife, played by Ann Sheridan. Presented here, through the courtesy of The Library of Congress, is a new scan of the rarely seen 130-minute cut, a substantially different film from the 112-minute version in general circulation.
