Love Affair. 1939. USA. Directed by Leo McCarey. Screenplay by McCarey, Delmer Daves, Donald Ogden Stewart, Mildred Cram. With Irene Dunne, Charles Boyer. 88 min.
Love Affair is a pivotal film in McCarey’s career, as it both completes the trilogy on marriage begun by Make Way for Tomorrow and The Awful Truth and introduces the spiritual themes that shape his great religious trilogy of the 1940s (Going My Way, The Bells of St Mary’s, and Good Sam). Amazingly, this perfectly structured film was largely improvised, after the censors abruptly rejected McCarey’s initial screenplay. We are proud to present MoMA’s restoration of McCarey’s personal print, a glowingly beautiful copy of a film too often presented in poor public-domain copies.
