Saint Joan. 1957. USA. Directed by Otto Preminger. Screenplay by Graham Greene, based on the play by George Bernard Shaw. With Jean Seberg, Richard Widmark, John Gielgud. 112 min.

Preminger’s film is based on George Bernard Shaw’s play about Joan of Arc, the 15th-century heroine who helped rescue France from English domination during the Hundred Years’ War. Joan was later burnt at the stake, accused of witchcraft. After a talent search for the actress to play Saint Joan, 18-year-old Jean Seberg of Marshalltown, Iowa, was selected from over 18,000 contestants.
