Chafing at his wife’s dominance, a medical student abandons his calling to work for a cosmetics company, then turns to religion in his increasingly desperate search for meaning. This chilly, ironic, formally inventive feature debut by Edgar Reitz (Heimat) won the prize for best first film at the 1967 Venice Film Festival.
