In Rederring, a small town in Cornwall, the young maidens are upset, as there have been no recent weddings. All of the potential bachelors want to marry the stunning Rose Maybud, but she has vowed eternal maidenhood. Years before, Rose had been engaged to Sir Roderic, an ancestor of Rupert the Baronet of Ruddigore. Rupert was cruel and persecuted women he thought were witches. When he sent one of them to the stake, Rose placed a curse for eternal unhappiness on the Ruddigore clan.
