Frankie and Johnnie. 1936. USA. Directed by Chester Erskine, John H. Auer. 66 min.
Screenplay by Lou Goldberg, Moss Hart, Jack Kirkland. With Helen Morgan, Chester Morris, Lilyan Tashman. An independent production filmed at the Biograph studio in the Bronx, this lively but little known feature was an early victim of the Production Code Administration, which insisted on extensive cuts and retakes. Shot in 1934, it was not released until 1936, when Helen Morgan’s powerful portrayal of Julie in Universal’s Show Boat returned her to stardom. Restored by The Museum of Modern Art
