Trouble in Paradise. 1932. USA. Directed by Ernst Lubitsch. 80 min.
Screenplay by Samson Raphaelson. With Herbert Marshall, Miriam Hopkins, Kay Francis, Edward Everett Horton, Charlie Ruggles. This archetypal Lubitsch comedy, the fourth of his nine collaborations with the great Raphaelson, was the director’s favorite. Its flagrant amorality helped spur the Hollywood production code, but the film also lit the trail for the sound comedies of Howard Hawks, Leo McCarey, Gregory La Cava, Preston Sturges, and innumerable others in succeeding decades.
