The genre film sleeper of 2015 was this debut feature by the novelist S. Craig Zahler, an extension of the captivity narrative that haunts the American Western (in films such as John Ford’s Two Rode Together) into the realm of gothic horror. Kurt Russell stars as a small-town sheriff who leads a posse in search of three townspeople kidnapped by a clan of cave dwellers out of prehistoric times. Zahler’s rich sense of character, nuanced dialogue, classically composed widescreen images, and dramatic restraint reveal a significant new talent. Courtesy of Calber Media.
