Where to Invade Next. 2015. USA. Directed by Michael Moore. In English, Arabic, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Norwegian, and Portuguese; English subtitles.. 110 min.
“My mission? I will invade countries with names I can mostly pronounce, take the things we need from them, and bring it all back home. Because we have problems no army can solve.” So says America’s self-proclaimed “secret weapon,” Michael Moore, at the beginning of his new film. Director of eight feature-length documentaries on contemporary American issues, Moore continues to use humor and irony to call attention to needed social reforms. In a time when the news is filled with world conflict, Moore decides to flip the idea of invasion as an act of aggression and to consider instead what might happen if we absorbed the good things found in other countries and adopted them as our own. Visiting country after country, Moore plants the American flag in order to usurp delicious and healthy school lunches from France; humane prisons that are guarded without guns from Norway; lengthy vacations from Italy; and a future where women transform world leadership, following the example of Iceland’s pioneering, democratically elected prime minister. This is a documentary about dreaming a different future for ordinary citizens.
