The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. 1938. USA. Directed by Norman Taurog. 90 min.
Screenplay by John V.A. Weaver, based on the novel by Mark Twain. With Tommy Kelly, Jackie Moran, Ann Gillis. Twain’s vision of antebellum life on the Mississippi River gets the Hollywood treatment, but in a most authentic manner. Cinematographer James Wong Howe applied muted, autumnal tones to this heartfelt story, ignoring the garish palette suggested by the studio’s Technicolor advisers. MoMA holds some of the earliest surviving Technicolor nitrate materials for this American classic.
