Screenplay by Norman Reilly Raine, Heinz Herald, Geza Herczeg, based on the book Zola and His Time by Matthew Josephson. With Paul Muni, Gale Sondergaard, Joseph Schildkraut. This is a fictonalized account of the life of the French novelist Emile Zola, best known for his naturalistic writing style and the multi-novel epic focusing on the Rougon-Macquart clan, including works such as Nana and Thérèse Raquin. Zola was also famous for his defense of Captain Alfred Dreyfus in the 1898 open letter “J’accuse,” which appeared on the front page of the Paris newspaper L’Aurore. This print reflects the 1940s release version.
