Un Chapeau de paille d’Italie (The Italian Straw Hat). 1928. France. Written and directed by René Clair. Silent, with English subtitles. 84 min.

Based on the play by Eugene Labiche, Marc Michel. With Albert Préjean, Marise Maïa, Olga Tschékowa. En route to his wedding, a bridegroom’s horse eats the artificial flowers adorning the hat of an unfaithful wife. When the wife and her paramour discover what has happened, the man insists that the bridegroom replace the hat, as no decent woman would dare go hatless in public. But if the bridegroom spends time looking for a new hat, he will miss own wedding.

This film accompanies Modern “Matinees”: Fashionably Late.
