Designing Woman. 1957. USA. Directed by Vincente Minnelli. 118 min.
Screenplay by George Wells. With Gregory Peck, Lauren Bacall, Dolores Gray. Minnelli’s 1957 romantic comedy is an account of shifting gender roles in postwar America, with Peck as a manly-man sportswriter tossed into the metrosexual world of his new wife, a successful designer (Bacall). In a rare acting role, Jack Cole plays Randy Owen, a demanding, unmistakably gay choreographer in the mold of…Jack Cole. Though not strictly a musical, the film includes a glorious backstage number, "There'll Be Some Changes Made,” starring Dolores Gray (as coached by Cole assistant Barrie Chase). Always ahead of his time, Cole kicks it in the film’s dance-as-combat martial-arts finale.
