Exquisitely filmed by cinematographer James Wong Howe, this modern Western, the second of the four collaborations between Ritt and Newman in the 1960s, won Neal an Oscar. Ritt, who had been a protégé of Elia Kazan at the Group Theater during the Depression, had been a blacklisted television director in the 1950s.
